SUPER SOUL SUNDAY: “Amapiano Live Balcony Mix Africa 27 (Moja Cafe)” by Major League DJz

Every Sunday, I look forward to sharing with you, here on The G-Listed, a digital mixtape of more than an hour of house, soul, R&B, neo-soul, hip-hop, jazz, lo-fi, city pop, gospel, amapiano, or afrobeat music that I have been enjoying. These are the mixes that I enjoy as the soundtracks and background music of my workdays, moods, travels, or socializing with people having similar music tastes.

Today, I am excited to share the first amapiano mix I ever shared on my platform. Major League DJz is a deejay and production team of South African twin brothers whose international fame skyrocketed in early 2020 through their amapiano mix series shot live in various social places in South Africa. Their sets influence deejays in European, North American, and South American major cities to garner attention with live mix sets so much that they have been honored by Mix Magazine as one of the top 21 deejays of 2021.

Are you unfamiliar with amapiano music? Think soulful house music with a South African flare and an amapiano live set or gathering being more of a modern vibe than the energy of lively dancing at a house music event. Amapiano is a style of house music that emerged in South Africa in 2012 that is a hybrid of deep house, jazz, and lounge music characterized by synths, airy pads, and wide percussive basslines. It is distinguished by high-pitched piano melodies, Kwaito basslines, low-tempo 90s South African house rhythms, and percussions from another local subgenre of the house known as Bacardi.
